U.S. Regulators Recognize and Classify the Brand CachaFazenda Mae De Ouro as a Distilled Spirit Specialty From Brazil. (Revised)*
The Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau of the Department of the Treasury (formerly known as the ATF) has issued a letter approving the brand CachaFazenda Mae De Ouro to be imported as a Cacha(Distilled from Sugar Cane) rather than as a rum.
Washington, D.C. January 12, 2005 -- We are extremely pleased that the American ATF has granted us a waiver from labeling our product as common rum. Our authentic alambique (distilled using a copper still) cachais definitely not rum and this letter proves that we have convinced them that this true. stated Nahor Luz de Faria J , the producer of CachaFazenda Mae De Ouro while speaking at a press conference in Minas Gerais, Brazil.
According to American laws, all spirits distilled from the juice of the sugar cane plant are classified as rum, and are therefore required to use the word rum on their label. While distinct grape brandies such as cognac are officially recognized under similar laws, U.S. regulators currently do not recognize any regional types of rum. This is due to the basic fact that rum, like vodka, can be produced by anyone, anywhere in the world. CachaFazenda Mae De Ouro distinguished itself from other sugar cane based spirits with a traditional Brazilian production method that is not duplicated in rum distillation.
When we first submitted this authentic cachafor BATF approval we were told that we could import it only if we included the phrase Brazilian Rum on the label. said U.S. Brand Manager David R. Catania. After a brief discussion with the producers we decided to reject this concession. To do so would have forsaken the rich traditions of cachaproduction and its part in the history of Brazil. We just couldnt have that on our conscience, so standing on principal we fought and won the recognition that authentic cachadeserves. And besides, you just cant make a caipirinha with rum.that would be a crime.
